With all tools and software at our disposal nowadays, there's been a shift in paradigm for the engineering work.
Instead of only doing analysis of existing systemas, parts, machines or structures, the complexity of doing a detailed analysis of an already existing object is dropping fast.
This opens a huge opportunity for market growth and technology development as the cost of doing a reanalysis of someone’s work is becoming easier.
There's already a variety of equipments that take data from reality and turn them to digital form. These data come in the form of point clouds, with precise adjustable measurements. However, even with very close points on our point cloud data, there's always blindspot, still today a major topic of discussion.
To convert points into surfaces, the most used and basic form is to define a mesh.
But joining points with straight lines will provide not so good results because the curve information of the surface will be lost. To minimize that, there're some techniques using points to create surfaces supported on mathematical models which give surfaces for the objects closer to reality but, in majority, still not true copies.
There are algorithms that use advanced techniques and give robust models based on primitive information provided by parts separation of a piece. These recreate physical shapes with better accuracy but it’s also possible to see that there's lots of work to develop.
