Reverse Engineering Developments

With all the tools and all the software that we have at our disposal nowadays the engineer work changed its paradigm. Instead of doing only analysis of existing systems, parts, machines or structures, the complexity of doing a detailed analysis of something that already exist, is decreasing very fast. This gives a lot of opportunity for market growth and technology development since the cost of doing a reanalysis of someone’s work is rapidly decreasing.

There is already a diversity of equipment’s that can take data from the reality to create a digital form. These data come in the form of point clouds, points with measurements that can have the precision we want, sacrificing of course time. Even with very close points on our point cloud data, there is a blind zone between the points and that blind zone is a topic of past, present and future research.

To convert the points into surfaces, the most used and basic form is to define a mesh with those points. As you can understand, joining points with straight lines will give not so good results because the curve information of the surface will be lost. To minimize that, there are some techniques that use the points to create surfaces supported on mathematical models and give surfaces for the objects, closer to the reality but in most of the cases still not copies of the reality. There are algorithms that use advanced techniques and give robust models based on primitive information provided by parts separation of a piece.

The algorithms recreate physical shapes with better accuracy but it’s also possible to see that there are a lot of work and things to develop. More tools for the engineers work and more concepts to shift the way we do things.
